to Jul 1

Broadway on the High Seas 10: An Odyssey through the Greek Isles

Join Playbill Travel and Broadway’s brightest stars for our 10th voyage on the high seas as we travel through the Greek Isles, beginning and ending in Athens. The city's remarkable 3,000 years of history and treasure trove of Europe’s greatest artifacts and historical sites—the Acropolis, the Temple of Parthenon, the New Acropolis Museum, the Theatre of Herodes Atticus, the Ancient Agora, the Roman Agora—will make our visit truly thrilling.

After departing Athens (Piraeus), the ship is scheduled to visit seven islands, each filled with gorgeous sights, interesting tours, and beautiful beaches. Our journey will take us to Patmos, followed by Milos, Santorini, Syros, Delos, Mykonos, Hydra, and then back to Athens (Piraeus) to finish our extraordinary trip.

And as always, Playbill Travel will bring along a lineup featuring some of the most talented stars Broadway has to offer, this time aboard Ponant’s Le Lyrial. Travel + Leisure Magazine recently praised the ship, saying, “Sailing aboard Le Lyrial is like hitching a ride on the mega yacht of your richest, most adventurous French friend. Nothing about it feels like a conventional cruise ship.”

When Tony-nominated sisters Ann Hampton Callaway and Liz Callaway combine musical forces, they put the revelry into rivalry in this award winning show of great songs and witty banter. SIBLING REVELRY was first presented at New York’s Rainbow and Stars, garnered raves at The Donmar Warehouse in London, and continues to sell out halls across the country both as a trio act and with symphony orchestras. The best selling CD on DRG Records, remains one of the classic cabaret must-haves.

Separately, of course, they have made names for themselves: Ann’s an acclaimed pop/jazz singer and songwriter and Liz is a Broadway veteran and recording artist. But put them together, and this dynamic duo proves they’re one singular sensation, whether singing Broadway showstoppers from Chicago, Wicked and Cats or rousing renditions of jazz and pop standards like “Happy Days/Get Happy,” “Friendship” and their TV hit, the theme from “The Nanny.”

New York City - Everybody Rise: A Resistance Cabaret

The Broadway at Birdland concert series is proud to announce a concert reading of “Everybody Rise: A Resistance Cabaret,” written by Emmy-winner Joe Keenan. A bevy of theatrical luminaries will star, including Brad Oscar, Chip Zien, Richard Kind, Kristine Mengelkoch, Taylor Crousore, and Christine Pedi.

“Everybody Rise! A Resistance Cabaret” is an evening of classic show tunes all lethally rewritten for the age of Trump. This hilarious bouquet of parodies springs from the fiendish mind of Joe Keenan, an Emmy-winning “Frasier” writer and novelist (Blue Heaven, My Lucky Star). The midterms brought us a Blue Wave, and we’ll celebrate with laughter, fresh hope, and a raft of great show tunes you’ll never hear the same way again.

Joe Keenan is a writer, producer, playwright, and lyricist. He is a five time Emmy-winner for his work on NBC's hit comedy series “Frasier.” He is also the author of the novels Blue Heaven and Putting on the Ritz. He lives in Studio City, CA.

Merman and Martin: An American Pops Orchestra Tribute
Birdland Theater
Tuesday, February 19 at 7pm
Special Guest Star Liz Callaway

Maestro Luke Frazier and members of the critically acclaimed American Pops Orchestra will be joined by featured APO performers from the group's first four seasons in a tribute to two titans of the broadway stage, Ethel Merman and Mary Martin. Cast members include Liz Callaway, Rayshun Lamar (“The Voice”), Ali Ewoldt (Phantom of the Opera), Kate Davis (Acclaimed Bass Player and Vocalist), Paige Faure (Miss Saigon), Mary Michael Patterson (Phantom of the Opera), Vishal Vaidya (Groundhog Day) and more!

The American Pops Orchestra (APO) has been hailed by DC Metro Theatre Arts as an “innovative group of artists [that] are reinvigorating the tunes you know and love with a contemporary flair that never fails to please.” APO is dedicated to the vast, rich repertoire of American music and to creating fresh, entertaining programming. These modern takes on classic music define what makes APO fun, fresh and funky. DC Metro Theatre Arts continues “With the Pops continually raising the bar with its programming, it is guaranteed that we will continue to be astounded.”

Since its inception in 2015, The American Pops has made its mark in the orchestral world, performing at world-class venues such as Lincoln Center, the Kennedy Center, New York City’s Town Hall, the Smithsonian, the Anthem and many more. After a critically successful third season, APO is gearing up for a record-breaking, ten-show 2018-2019 season. APO is bringing its critically acclaimed musicianship and its focus on diversity (in both music and casting) for another season that is sure to dazzle its sophisticated audience of first-time orchestra attendees and long-time pops music lovers alike.

The American Pops Orchestra is comprised of the most excellent players in the Washington, DC area and even boasts a few players from New York City. They feel equally at home playing everything from Gershwin’s sweeping melodies to 80’s disco music accompanied by a live DJ. According to The New York Times in reference to their NYC debut, “what warmed the evening was the sumptuous lilt of the American Pops Orchestra, conducted by Luke Frazier.”

Aside from APO’s musical excellence, APO is an orchestra who cares. It is the firm belief of founder, Luke Frazier, that music is a right for anyone who wants to hear it. Frazier has led the organization to provide free, monthly community concerts and offer free tickets to military veterans and their families, at-risk children and youth, underserved families and many others. Frazier’s vision to reinvigorate the Great American Songbook is contingent on bringing this iconic music to all members of the community and beyond.

The American Pops Orchestra has garnered quite a list of incredible artists with whom they have shared the stage. That list includes Christine Ebersole, Luis Fonsi, Liz Callaway, Arturo Sandoval, Andra Day, Tommy Tune, Elaine Paige, Gaby Moreno, Michelle Williams, Paulo Szot, Betty Who, Jared Grimes, Marilyn Maye, Fran Drescher, Norm Lewis, Brian Stokes Mitchell, Laura Osnes, Lindsay Mendez, Ron Raines, Moya Angela, Claybourne Elder, Amber Iman, Ali Ewoldt, Bria Skonberg, Olympian Greg Louganis and so many more.

About Liz Callaway & Ann Hampton Callaway

Ann Hampton Callaway is one of the leading champions of the great American Songbook, having made her mark as a singer, pianist, composer, lyricist, arranger, actress, educator, television host, and producer. A born entertainer, Callaway blends jazz and traditional pop with her unique singing style, making her a mainstay in concert halls, theaters, and jazz clubs as well as in the recording studio, on television, and in film. She is best known for her Tony-nominated performance in the hit Broadway musical Swing! and for writing and singing the theme song to the hit TV series The Nanny. Callaway is a platinum award-winning writer whose songs are featured on seven of Barbra Streisand’s recent albums. The only composer to have collaborated with Cole Porter, she has also written songs with Carole King, Rolf Lovland, and Barbara Carroll, to name a few.

Liz Callaway is a Tony nominee and Emmy Award-winning actress, singer, and recording artist. She made her Broadway debut in Stephen Sondheim’s Merrily We Roll Along, received a Tony Award nomination for her performance in Baby, and for five years, won acclaim as Grizabella in Cats. She has also starred in the original casts of Miss Saigon, The Three Musketeers, and The Look of Love. Liz sang the Academy Award nominated song “Journey to the Past” in the animated feature Anastasia and is also the singing voice of Princess Jasmine in Disney’s Aladdin and the King of Thieves and The Return of Jafar.
